“You’re Gonna Love These Healthy Nori-Pops”

Such a cute Halloween ad from Crest and Oral-B. Adorable kids in Halloween costumes, sitting in a focus group, gamely trying new candy ideas and offering their opinions. So cute.

It’s a fun spoof of focus groups, too. One of several ads over the years that gently – and sometimes not so gently – mock the venerable, good ol’ fashioned group discussion we do hundreds of each year.

And boy, are they eminently mockable. Mostly because we do far too many that aren’t really useful. Another week, another couple of days sitting in the dark behind the glass watching people say things we don’t care about, discard and substitute our own in-going beliefs and ideas for anyway. No wonder focus groups are mockable.

Perhaps this critique sounds odd, coming from someone who makes her living in large part doing focus

I cringe – even while I’m chuckling – when I watch a cute ad like this one from Crest, because it highlights the absolute worst focus group sin of all: poor questioning and probing. It’s one of the things that makes this ad so charming, and makes real focus groups so awful and useless when they sound like this ad.

How many focus group problems can you spot in this ad? I stopped counting after about 6 or 7.

Yes, the ad is cute. And of course it’s a parody. Except sometimes it’s not. Ouch.
